The Stone Wedding – Eastern Rhodopes

The Stone Wedding is a natural phenomenon near the village of Zimzelen, 5km away from Kardzhali. Nature has left a very impressive stone formation which resembles a gathering of people, animals and birds. In 1974, this miracle of nature was declared a protected site of national importance. And just because it is an ancient Bulgarian place, there is an interesting legend told in connection with this place: A handsome young man fell in love with a charming lass from the near-by village. But - because she always wore a headcloth - he had seen only her eyes; he had never seen her face because of local custom. He loved her very much and became ill from the pain. His father was worried and went to the lass's family to save his son's life. He bought her, according to the custom in those ancient days, for a lot of gold. The wedding guests took the lass and set off for Zimzelen. Riding a mule, the bride was thinking about her native home but was happy to marry the young man. The father-in-law walked next to her with his son and all the wedding guests. As they passed through the clear stream, a sudden gust of wind blew away the bride's headcloth. The father-in-law saw and was awe-struck at the beautiful face of the young lass. He came 'round and evil thoughts entered his mind. The wind understood him and got furious. A storm began and then the worst thing happened -- the bride turned into stone, as she was all dolled up, on her mule. After her, the father-in-law and the wedding guests were turned into stone too. The young man could only stand in the terror and agony of the moment, but soon he began to wail and begged the storm to turn him into stone too. So it happened. He turned into stone but even today, there's a puddle shining in front of him. The village old people say the drops in this glimmering puddle are his tears.

October 21 - Kardjali public holiday

Since 1937, every year on October 21 the town of Kardjali celebrates its official public holiday. On this day in 1912, the town was liberated from the Ottoman yoke. Kardjali is located in the very heart of the eastern Rhodope mountain, along the two banks of the Arda river, 100 km southeast of Plovdiv. 6000 years-old remains of human life as well as ample examples of the presence of Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, late-Ottoman and Bulgarian culture have been found on the territory of the town. After the town's liberation from the Ottoman rule in 1912, Kardjali became the "tobacco warehouse of the eastern Rhodopes", as some of the best quality tobaccos are grown on the special soils in the region. Landmarks of interest are the 11th-12th century Bulgarian basilica "St. John the Precursor", the Historical Museum, housed in a vast mosque-like building and containing superb collections from prehistoric ritual objects to ethnographic costumes and crafts. The two big dams on both sides of the town are excellent places for tourism, water sports and entertainment. Kardjali is the starting point for visits to the numerous rock formations in the region-the Stone Wedding and mushrooms, the Stone Forest, the Rock Widow, the Rocks at Ustra, and the medieval fortress of Perperek.

The Vulture Volcano

In the heart of the Rhodopi mountain, some 60 km east of the town of Kardjali and 60 km southeast of the town of Haskovo, between the Studen Kladenetz and Ivaylovgrad dam lakes, the river Arda cuts through the pinnacles of a prehistoric two-crater volcano, forming a gorgeous canyon. 4 protected areas have been established within the volcano crater. The natural landmark Kovan Kaya includes a total of four picturesque rock complexes, screes, open terrains, located down the northern shore of the Arda river. It has been declared a natural landmark with a view of protecting some rare and protected birth species inhabiting the area. Of the species, included in Bulgaria’s Red Book, the unique white-headed and Egyptian vulture live around the area. The black vulture also inhabits the place, as well as other threatened and rare species, such as the black stork, white-tail buzzard, blue and versicoloured rock thrust, etc.

» The fortress of Monyak

The fortress of Monyak

The Monyak (also known as Mneakos) fortress is located eastwards of Kardjali (Eastern Rhodope Mountain) over the village of Shiroko pole. It is one of the biggest and well-fortified fortresses in the Rhodope Mountain covering 50 decares land area. The external fortress wall is built of stones soldered with plaster in a way following the curves of the surrounding rocks. Some parts of the 7.8 meters high fortress wall are still preserved. Fortresses main gate is on the west side and was protected by two rectangular towers. The citadel perches on the highest eastern part of the massif. For an additional fortification some massive bastions were built on the outer side throughout the wall as two of them are flanking the entrance. Special care of the fresh water reservoirs and storehouses was taken when the fortress was being built. Archeologists explored some of them. Inside the fortress there was a military garrison and during wars all people from surrounding villages were using it as a shelter. The Monyak Fortress was also bounded with the crusaders when in 1206 they crossed the Rhodope Mountain area. Their commander was the famous Marshall Zhofrua de la Vilarduen who wrote in his chronicles that the crusaders understood about the death of their Emperor Baldwin II of Flanders when they were in the fertile Art Valley (Arda Valley) at the foot of the mighty Monyak Fortress. The Baron Meeting was conducted there and it decided to proclaim Henry of Flanders as the new Emperor of the Latin Empire.

Tatul - the Village of the Gods

Only 15 minutes away from Kardzhali has hidden a stone village. It is not only its name that is strange - Tatul. Most of the houses there are well carved out of stone blocks. Once, local people have brought them from the castles that had existed centuries ago in these places. Tatul excavations found out the site to have been an exceptional religious center about 4000 years ago, significant for the whole Eastern Mediterranean. Incredible collection of seals prove a clear link of the sacred spot to the live of sevast George Palaiologos, a famous historical person who lived in the period 1081-1115. He is the founder of the famous Palaiologos Dynasty, Byzantine emperors family in XIII-XV century. Several of the found 30 clay altars for sacrifices are from a completely unknown period of the middle Bronze Age - XIX-XVIII century B.C. Among the findings one can find dozens of whole vessels, that have been put around the altars, religious objects like the three wheels for the models of the celestial chariot, the top of a priest’s scepter, pottery with images of the solar cult, as well as a gold plate, part of a mask from the Mycenae period. An idol of the early Iron Age – a roughly made male figure, proves that religious activity had continued in that period as well.

Ancient Thracian city of Perperikon

The ancient Thracian city of Perperikon (also Perpericon) is located in the Eastern Rhodopes, 15 km northeast of the present-day town of Kardzhali, Bulgaria, on a 470 m high rocky hill, which is thought to have been a sacred place. The village of Gorna Krepost ("Upper Castle") is located at the foot of the hill and the gold-bearing Perpereshka River flows near it. Perperikon is the largest megalith ensemble in the Balkans. It is thought that the famous sanctuary and oracular shrine dedicated to Dionysus of the Bessi was situated there.
