» Troyan MonasteryTroyan Monastery
Some 10 km east from Troyan, in immediate proximity to the beautiful region of Oreshak, is situated the Troyan Monastery “Uspenie Bogorodichno”. There are little facts known about its early history. Most research-workers think it was founded in the beginning of the 17th century. According to one lost story, its founder was a nameless monk-anchoret. The history of the Troyan Monastery is mostly related to the Bulgarian National Revival period. Eminent men of letters worked here during the mid-18th century, and a School was also founded. In 1872, Vassil Levski set up here a secret revolutionary committee, which was joined by all the monks headed by the Father Superior Macarius. Four years later, the monastery became a citadel of the 1876 April Uprising. But above all, the Troyan Monastery is known for the creative work of Zahari Zograph who painted both the exterior and the interior (a rare practice for the time) of the main church. It is a fine example of the impact of the popular conception of the world and the influence of housing architecture on religious construction. Here, Zahari Zograph repeated the social and moral "experiments" in religious painting (the compositions Doomsday and the Wheel of Life), left his second self-portrait signed with amazing self confidence in spite of the Ottoman bondage, and painted the figures of Bulgarian and Russian saints. Besides, he painted a completely secular group portrait of the monastic brotherhood in the refectory - something highly unusual for the time. The Troyan monastery’s museum collection contains various works of applied arts as well. The iconostasis of the main church is a masterpiece of woodcarving. Amazing in its originality, is the much earlier carving of the holy altar gates in the St. Nikola Chapel. The monastery's "printery" in which fine graphic works, including many landscapes, were made, was widely known.
Crafts Museum in Troyan
The specialized Museum of Folk Crafts and Applied Arts in the town of Troyan (central Bulgaria) is one of its kind in Bulgaria. It is an institute for gathering, keeping and development of the local folk arts. The museum not only collects, keeps and restores wonderful collections of pottery and metals, traditional folk cloths and dresses, wood-made articles, etc., but it also studies and popularizes through its scientific issues the folk arts and history of the region. A total of 131,326 exhibits are kept in the museum. The oldest exhibits in the museum date from 10-9th century B.C. As early as the National Revival the town of Troyan became famous for the craft skills of its citizens. The local pottery at the time was mainly in warm colours – yellow, brown, green, but later in 20th century the traditional tonality was varied reaching different variants of the Troyan pattern. The woodworking also brought great fame to the Troyan masters. The woodcarvers of Novo Selo (now the town of Apriltsi) made the iconostases, the holy gates and the stalls in a number of churches and monasteries. Beside these crafts, the museum also exhibits metal-processing and artistic crafts. The Troyan many-colored rug and the fleecy rug, decorated with flowers, are particularly famous. Near the museum, the newly constructed Crafts Street is located. Works of famous local masters are exposed here. It is the first stage of the Ethnographic Trade-Craft Complex Charshiyata that is currently under construction.
Cherni Osam river
Cherni Osam river, which is considered the source of the Osam river, starts from the western part of the Troyanski Balkan, southwest from mountain peak Levski. The river runs through a long, narrow and quite sloping valley, takes a small right tributary – Jidov dol – near the village of Neshkovtsi and in the countryside “Smesieto” unites with its biggest tributary – the Kraiovishtica River. From the countryside “Smesieto” downhill, the Cherni Osam River heads north, takes up some more small tributaries near the village of Oreshak, then turns west and at the Velchovska neighborhood, approximately 3 km. from the town of Troyan joins the Beli Osam River. In this section the profile of the valley changes and the bottom of the river becomes broader and the slopes more steep. In general the river valley of Cherni Osam is narrow, deep with steep rocky slopes, the riverbed is covered with large rocks. The banks of the Cherni Osam River are afforested with beech-tree woods. From the village of Cherni Osam downhill, the woods become thinner and are gradually replaced by shorter vegetation. After the Cherni Osam River joins the Beli Osam River, near the town of Troyan the river continues its way under the name the Osam River. From there downhill the Osam River runs north and reaches the town of Lovech, passing through a hilly site. The Osam River mouths into the Danube River near the village of Cherkovna.
Chiflik
The resort village Chiflik is situated at the most upper course of the Beli Osam River, at the altitude of 750 m, at the foot of Middle Balkan, at the territory of Troyan Municipality. It raises some 160 km northeastern from Sofia, and 15 km southwestern from Troyan. The nature here is extraordinary beautiful, with alpine character. Some natural phenomena, part of the Central Balkan National Park are situated here. The winter here is mild, and the summer – cool, and the air – crystal clear. Close to the village of Chiflik, there is a thermal spring with hot water of 52°C, having quite valuable healing qualities. By structure, it resembles the mineral water of the springs in Gorna Bania, Bankia, Hissar, Momina Cheshma, and Varshets, and may be used for healing a number of diseases.
Sostra Fortress
The Sostra Fortress is located near the village of Lomets, Troyan district (Central Bulgaria). This is best protected Roman military post in Bulgaria and is a unique monument within the entire Roman Empire because of its architecture. Sostra was built over the ruins of a Thracian settlement and it was a fortification of a military cohort of 1000 people. The settlement was situated at the important ancient road Exos – Philipopolis (today’s Plovdiv) – connecting the connecting the Roman provinces Lower Moesia and Thracia. It was explored for the first time by the Austro-Hungarian archeologists Felix Philipp Kanitz in the second half of 19th century. The complex embraced a quite well fortified military unit, called castel (castle) or a fortress, a few civil settlements, necropolis or this was a small Roman town that lived from the middle of 2nd century till the end of 5th century. Its name derives from the Greek work “sostrum”, meaning a bandage or a waist-band and this perfectly describes Sostra, as it lay in a valley of the River Ossum, blocking unchecked access to the roads leading to Phillipopolis. The fortress shaped as diamond has the impressive dimensions of 130 by 130m. The fortress walls, having sunk two meters in the ground, are presently uncovered. A number of coins carried partially protected information were found in Sostra. A part of the coins are proved to date from the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. The earliest however are the Hellenic coins. Antique pottery and jewelry, some of which being highly appreciated at the international cultural market were also found here. Everything found so far, was completely restored and exhibited in the Historical - craft museum of Troyan, except of the bronze mask, which is exhibited in the National Museum of History in Sofia.
