Some of the highest alpine walls and most difficult climbing route are situated here. One of the most beautiful lake in the Balkan peninsula lies here – Strashnoto ezero (the Fearful Lake). Maliovitsa is the start off point for lots of tourist routes which head to Northwestern Rila: to the Ivan Vazov chalet (7 hours); the Ribni ezera (Fish Lakes) chalet – 9-10 hours; the Rila Monastery (6 hours); the Strashnoto ezero shelter (3 hours); the Seven Rila Lakes (8 hours on the mountain ridge; and 5 hours below it). Borovets
Borovets - the biggest and the oldest Bulgarian winter resort, is located at the foot of the Balkan’s highest peak – Musala (2925 m), in the northern slopes of the Rila Mountain. Borovets is situated at the altitude of 1350 m among centuries-old pine-tree woods. The resort is 73 km away from the capital city of Sofia, and 126 km away from the city of Plovdiv. It was established as early as the end of 19 century as a hunting site for the Bulgarian kings. Later on, Borovets gradually developed as a first-class ski resort, having lots of hotels, restaurants offering variety of meals, and an excellent network of ski-tracks, rope-lines and lifts. Nowadays Borovets is a resort of Alpine type, offering wonderful opportunities for any type of winter sports. The ski-tracks in the resort have a total length of over 45 km, diverse in difficulty. The excellent off-the-mountain infrastructure involves variety of interesting relax opportunities.
Belyova Church Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The oldest Christian monument in the region of Samokov is the Belyova Church Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is situated between the town of Samokov and the resort of Borovets. No one knows when the church was built but the woman jewelry dated to 12-13 century found here prove that the church is quite old. Furthermore, archaeologists found evidence of monks buried in the necropolis near the church from the end of 11 – early 12 century. Other findings also show that the Belyova Church existed during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. The legend tells the temple was once a small private church of the local lord of the manor Belyo, whom the church was named after. Gradually it was expanded and the old frescos were replaced by a newer coat. Local people tell that the church was dug into the ground in 15 century so that it was protected from the Turks’ ravages. In 1869 the prominent master Nikola Obrazopisov started renovating the church. He wall-painted the icon of St. Simeon of Samokov. Simeon Popovich, as the saint was born, became Metropolitan of Samokov in 1734. Highly educated, the Bulgarian bishop lead the Christian people against the Ottomans. He was captured in July 1337, tortured, and hung on August 21, 1737 is Sofia. The pasha forbade the Christians to bury him in Sofia. The relics of the Saint were found during archaeological excavations in the Belyova Church in 1995.
The Seven Rila Lakes
The Seven Rila Lakes (Bulgarian: Седем рилски езера, Sedem rilski ezera) are a group of lakes of glacial origin (glacial lakes), situated in the northwestern Rila Mountains in Bulgaria. They are the most visited group of lakes in Bulgaria. The lakes are situated between 2,100 and 2,500 metres elevation above sea level.
Each lake carries a name associated with its most characteristic feature. The highest one is called Salzata ("The Tear") due to its clear waters that allow visibility in depth. The next one in height carries the name Okoto ("The Eye") after its almost perfectly oval form.
National Park Rila
Rila is the highest mountain in Bulgaria. At 2925 m, Musala Peak is the highest peak in the Balkans and all of South-Eastern Europe. The Rila area has an austere alpine beauty, with stone ridges, towering peaks, deep precipices and numerous crystal-clear lakes (more than 140) and springs. The name of the mountain is thought to originate from a Thracian word signifying "rich in water". Three of the largest Bulgarian rivers spring from the mountain - the Maritza, the Iskar, and the Mesta; some of the largest tributaries of the Struma also originate here. The river valley separates the mountain into four regions. Twelve of the eighteen highest Rila peaks above 2700 m, are situated in the Eastern region. The main Balkan water shed passes through the Middle region - between the Black Sea and Aegean basin. The most alpine part is located in the Northwestern region. The Parangalitza reserve and the group of the Seven Rila Lakes are among the most attractive natural sites.
Musala
Musala (Bulgarian: Мусала) is the highest peak in Bulgaria and the entire Balkan Peninsula, standing at 2,925 m (9,596 ft). The summit of the Rila mountain in southwestern Bulgaria, Musala is the highest peak between the Alps and the Caucasus and the highest in Eastern Europe bar the Caucasus.
The easiest climb is by a straightforward footpath from the ski resort of Borovets, 10 km to the north; there is also a Gondola lift from Borovets to the Yastrebets peak at 2,369 m altitude and several mountain chalets. From Yastrebets it is a one hour hike to the Musala chalet (2,430 m), from which the ascent to the summit takes another 1,5 to 2 hours via the shelter Everest, the highest mountain hut in Bulgaria. A weather station functioned at the summit until it was devastated by a fire in 1984. The station was re-opened in 1999 as the Environmental Observatory "Musala" of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences where, in addition to climatic conditions, air pollutants and space radiation are also monitored.
