The Vulture Volcano
In the heart of the Rhodopi mountain, some 60 km east of the town of Kardjali and 60 km southeast of the town of Haskovo, between the Studen Kladenetz and Ivaylovgrad dam lakes, the river Arda cuts through the pinnacles of a prehistoric two-crater volcano, forming a gorgeous canyon. 4 protected areas have been established within the volcano crater. The natural landmark Kovan Kaya includes a total of four picturesque rock complexes, screes, open terrains, located down the northern shore of the Arda river. It has been declared a natural landmark with a view of protecting some rare and protected birth species inhabiting the area. Of the species, included in Bulgaria’s Red Book, the unique white-headed and Egyptian vulture live around the area. The black vulture also inhabits the place, as well as other threatened and rare species, such as the black stork, white-tail buzzard, blue and versicoloured rock thrust, etc.
The House of Chorbadji Paskal in Haskovo
One of the sights of the town of Haskovo is the House of Chorbadji Paskal. The story tells that Chorbadji Paskal was a wealthy and influential merchant, who took part in the municipal government during the Bulgarian National Revival. Today his house accommodates the exposition The Town Life after the Liberation. The exhibition in Paskal’s house shows the transition from traditional rural way of life to town lifestyle in the second half of 19 century. Then, the economic progress and the new needs of the wealthier merchants and craftsmen required new decisions on houses’ structure and decoration. Some of the houses were extended in capacity and height. The housing premises were moved to the upper floors and the commercial remained on the ground floor or in separate premises. The internal decoration of the house, typical for the revival period, is quite optimistic and full of life.
Balkan is a village situated in Southern Bulgaria. It lies in the Stambolovo municipality, between the towns Haskovo and Kardjali. The people here live mainly by growing tobacco. The Balkan dam lake is also situated in this notably picturesque zone. The remarkable nature and the tranquillity of the dam lake in this part of paradise offer the perfect holiday, and the fishing fans could enjoy fishing White Amur and Bighead Carp, stocked in the dam lake. The beautiful houses, scattered around the dam lake and quite hospitable local men, complete the calm atmosphere for the people resting here. This wonderful place is located just about 20 km away from the holy town of Perperikon, and the biggest Rhodopes river Arda flows about 30 km away.
