Ethnographic complex Etara

Etara is the first outdoor ethnographic museum in Bulgaria. It is located 8 km south of the town of Gabrovo and occupies an area of 7 hectares in the woody slopes of the Stara Planina mountain. The building of the complex started in 1963 and was completed and officially opened on September 7 1964. The aim of the museum is to show the architecture, lifestyle and economic past of the Bulgarians in the period of the National Revival (the second half of the XVIII and XIX century), when Gabrovo was famous for its rapid economic development – more than 26 crafts were developing in it. The products, made by the local craftsmen, were sold as far as Bucharest, Viena, Marseilles, and Anadola. Nowadays, tourists can still see how vessels are made of clay under an old technology, how skillful masters are elaborating exquisite fretwork, and baking different bread items following old recipes. The unique spirit of the museum has been achieved through the restoration of many buildings, which had survived through the years, as well as through the moving here of some original facilities, found in the region. Some of the buildings on the territory of Etara are exact copies of famous buildings from the National Revival period.<br /><br />

Nunnery Presentation of the Blessed Virgin - Batos

The village of Batoshevo is located in the north-eastern slopes of the Razlatitza massif, in the Middle Predbalkan mountain. It is situated 15 km away from the town of Sevlievo, 25 km away from the town of Gabrovo, and some 170 km away from the capital city of Sofia. The nunnery Blessed Virgin is in the very center of the village. Nobody knows exactly when it was founded. What we know from history is that it was burnt down in 1674, and restored two centuries later- in 1872, by Minyu Prokopiev, who turned it into a “family monastery”, in which the first nun was one of his daughters – Maria. Between the ‘40s of the XIX century and the beginning of the XX century, the monastery existed as a convent, afterwards it became a monastery. It consists of a church, built in 1905, and some residential and farm buildings. The church preserves icons painted by Stanislav Dospevski. The monastery is also related to the preparation of the April Uprising in 1876. Nowadays, it is constantly operating. It has been proclaimed monument of culture.

Uzana – the geographic center of Bulgaria

The Uzana locality is a mountain resort, situated 20 km away from the town of Gabrovo between the national parks Central Balkan and Bulgarka. The locality is known for its crystal clear mountain air, quietness and its magnificent scenery. The air here is highly ionized and ozone-rich. The largest meadow in the Balkan Mountains is located in the Uzana background at an altitude of 1240 m, below the Ispolin peak. Here lies the geographic center of Bulgaria, marked with a special sign. Uzana is the starting point of many mountain routes around the countryside, as well as to the peaks of Shipka and Buzludja. The landscape of Central Balkan Mountains provides excellent opportunities for summer and winter tourism, as the ski tracks are suitable for slalom and ski running.

A Monument in the River

Besides all the other wonders the visitors of the town of Gabrovo (Central Bulgaria) may enjoy also the monument in the river. The citizens of Gabrovo have placed the statue of Racho Kovacha (Racho the Smith) over a rock in the Yantra River, in a way to save residential area and to avoid spending money on flowers for the monument. According to one of the legends a young man – a smith, called Racho settled here the waters of Yantra. He used to shoed the horses of the caravans that went or came back from the mountain. Generally, other people started living near his home, offering tailor services, cooking, cart repairing and hide processing. And as a huge hornbeam (Gabar in Bulgarian) rose near the fireplace of the smith, people called the settlement Gabrovo. Thus Racho Kovacha became the ancestor of the town and it was named after his hornbeam. The monument of Racho Kovacha is an impressive bronze figure. The local men consider it as a symbol of the artful and unflagging Gabrovo spirit, preserved in all the generations.

Bulgarka Natural Park

Bulgarka Natural Park is located on the north slopes of Central Stara planina mountain, above the towns of Gabrovo and Tryavna. Its area is characterized with diverse relief and ground forms: real mountains; river valleys; hills; saddles ridge rakenessnes. Its central position in Bulgaria and the specific of both relief and climate have been attracting peoples' attention since ancient times. The historical datum show that strategically important roads had run trough these places and have connected North to South, and the ridge of Stara planina mountain was considered as natural frontier. This determines the very rich historical heritage of the region. The specific character of the mountain, the transition from the high central Balkan, more ductile round forms of Eastern Stara planina mountain and the related natural landscapes, diverse flora and fauna, rich cultural heritage were the reasons to be established Bulgarka Natural park. Park's territory includes the ridge part of Shipka and Tryavna mountains. From Uzana and Osenikova polyana areas on west, to protected area "Studen kladenetz" on east, adjoining north slopes and part of the corresponding Fore-Balkan. In the ground morphology there are five different parts: "Shipchensko-Buzludjanska" - this is the part with the highest average altitude /Karadjova kula peak - 1511m/, the ridge part of Tryavna's mountain /with highest part Bedek peak - 1488m/, Studen kladenetz; Konarskoto, the north part of Shipka mountain; north slope of Gabrovian Fore-Balkan; north slope of Tryavna mountain and part of Tryavna Fore-Balkan.
