» Kaliakra capeKaliakra cape
Kaliakra cape stretches 2km deep into the sea and consists of 60-70m-high limestone rocks, the inaccessibility of which has been the main reason for the construction of an ancient fortress named Tirisis there. The fortress was successively used by Tracians, Romans, Byzantines and Bulgarians. According to legends, the fortress was guarding the treasuries of Lyzimah, successor of Alexander the Great. Today there are quite many remains of those ancient settlements, which can be seen exhibited in a small museum. One can also read there a legend telling the story of several Bulgarian girls who chose to jump from the high cape into the sea but not to be captured and converted to Islam by the Turks. The name Kaliakra means "beautiful cape," due to the abundant pink limestone. Legend has it that the color is from the blood of the defenders of the fortress. The Kaliakra cape was declared a protected area in 1941. The protected area has since been expanded already three times. At present it is a reserve spreading over 687.5 ha. It is one of the few places where the rare species of seal-monks, found only in the northern part of the Bulgarian coast, is to be seen.
Birds’ Bay (Taoukliman)
The Birds’s Bay, also known as Taoukliman (meaning literally Birds’ Bay in Turkish) lies 16 km north of Kavarna and 61 km away from the city of Varna. It is one of the many natural reserves along the Black Sea coast. It is famous for its many small beaches, few stair-like sand terraces, abundance of hot mineral water and a number of small exotic islets. During the seasonal migration of the birds, the bay welcomes hundreds of birds (seagulls, geese, golden eyes, etc.), which stop by for a rest and food. In those times, the lake becomes a real birds' paradise. The salt lake (or else known as 'firth') of Taoukliman, called also Nanevska Tuzla, lies on the lowest of one of the terraces. Its bottom is covered with black hydrogen sulphide mud, which is famous for its healing powers. Nearby, one can come across remains of pagan sanctuaries, settlements dating back to the Middle Ages, a Roman fortress used in the 5th century AC, a number of stone vessels used for wine production, etc. Between the terraces, a number of caves are dispersed, the most beautiful of them to be found in the lowest part – Golyamata Maara, Temnata Dupka (The Dark Hole), Aragonitovata cave, Iglenoto Uho (the Needle’s Eye), etc.<br /><br />
Chirakman cape
The Chirakman cape is one of the symbols of Kavarna (northern part of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast). It is located 3 km to the south of Kavarna and is the end of a lovely valley, through which passes the road to the port and the sea. Here, an intensive life has been bubbling for thousand of years. Not long ago archeologists found here a fortified fortress wall date to the 4th century AD. The founding showed that the town of Kavarna was one of the most fortified settlements at the West Coast of the Black Sea during the late-antique age. The fortified wall was found thanks to materials of the personal archive of the Czech archeologist Karel Shkorpil who worked in Bulgaria in the end 19-20th century. In the first century BC a destructive earthquake took place and split the cape and a great part of it sank into the sea. This is still of a great interest for the tourists.
