» Tsar Samuil Fortress

Tsar Samuil Fortress

Tsar Samuil fortress is located some 15 km away from the town of Petrich, at the foot of the Belasitsa mountain. It is situated on an upland right next to the right shore of the river of Strumeshnitza. Exactly here, back in 1014, one of the biggest tragedies in the history of Bulgaria took place. In a battle near the fortress, the Byzantine emperor Basil II, called the Bulgaroctone, crashed the Bulgarian army, headed by Tsar Samuil and took into captivity almost everyone. Tsar Samuil and his closest followers managed to escape in the last moment. According to the Christian doctrine, all captured Christians should be released after the end of the war. The Byzantine emperor violated this military rule and blinded 14,000 prisoners, leaving one man in every hundred with the sight in one eye to lead his comrades home. The Samuil fortress is a national monument, which will always remind to the future generations of the heroic fight of Samuil and the Bulgarian people for our country’s independence.

» Ovech Stone Fortress

Ovech Stone Fortress

There are two stone fortresses on the territory of Varna region: Petrich Kale near the village of Razdelna and Ovech, called Provat by the Byzantines and Tash Hisar by the Turks. Ovech (as the Bulgarians called it) is located in the Kaleto plateau, east of the town of Provadia. In different periods, it was inhabited by different cultures – Thraces, Romans, Byzantines, Jews. It was conquered by knights, Turks, Russians. During the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, Ovech was an important administrative, economic and religious center. King Peter II came to live in the fortress, after he gave up his crown and handed the power down to his younger brother Asen back in 1190. He was a keen hunter, that’s why he came here, where people say once there were marvelous forests. According to one legend, Ovech was the place where the movement of Ivaylo (the so-called “peasant king”) was born. Gradually, the fortress was abandoned. Some of the things reminding of its former splendor are the unique bridge connecting the fortress and the Tabiite plateau, many wells and train tanks, the ruins of the Metropolitan Church, the watch-towers, the stone gate, the knights’ prison, the marble pillars of Omurtag. The crest of the fortress represents an eagle, carved in the stamp-rings, found inside the fortress.

The Assumption of Holy Mary Temple in Petrich

The Assumption of Holy Mary Temple is the first Christian temple constructed in Petrich during the National Revival Period. The temple was built in 1857, according to a sultan’s royal. The best masters from Debar and Petrich were called for the construction. The entire population of Petrich took a voluntary part in the construction, as the stones were carried by hand from the town’s river, and the marble plates were carried from the Kozhuh district, where the antique town Petra once erected. The Assumption of Holy Mary Temple is a big stone building, with approximate dimensions of 24 to 17.5 m, and 7.5 m in height. In 1922 the narthex was closed and turned into two small administrative premises. According to the wall painting above the western door the temple was wall-painted in 1871 by the brothers from Debar Hristo, Isakii and Kuzman Makarievi. In 1975 the Assumption of Holy Mary Temple was declared a monument of culture of national importance. In 1981 a museum collection of 100 icons was opened in the museum. But in 1987 a fire devastated the temple. Only the wall paintings outside the narthex were saved.
