Koprivchtitsa is one of the most charming small Bulgarian towns, still preserving the atmosphere of the National Revival period. It is huddled in the mountain folds 111 km east of Sofia. The town offers a unique combination of legendary history and fascinating present. No other Bulgarian museum town boasts such a large number of houses and monuments - 383 in all, most of which have been restored to their original appearance. A unique collection of ethnographical treasures, old weapons, National Revival works of art, fine fretwork, household weaves and embroidery, national costumes and typical Bulgarian jewelry has also been preserved. It was here that the first bullet of the April Uprising against the Ottoman oppressors was fired in 1876. Specialists say that every house in Koprivshtitsa is a work of art. The Oslekov, Kableshkov and Lyutov houses are fine examples of this.

Dimcho Debelyanov’s Home-Museum in Koprivshtitsa
One of the most beautiful and beloved poems of the great Bulgarian poets Dimcho Debelyanov is devoted to his home, nested in the bosom of the Sredna Gora Mountain, in the unique town of Koprivshtitsa, still keeping the National Revival atmosphere of Bulgarian houses. The small blue house, surrounded by high stone walls, was constructed by the grandfather of the poet probably in 1830. The house has the warm feeling of home coziness having a ground floor for the winter, and a wide open verandah used by the family in summer. The incredible atmosphere is completed by the typically beautiful Koprivshtitsa yard, nested in the shadows of the high pine-trees and the fine morello-trees. Dimcho Debelyanov was born here in 1887. During the First World War, he was hardly 29-year old when he was killed in a battle near Demir Hisar on October 2, 1916. In 1931 the members of the literature circle Zhivo Slovo (Living words), who were close friend of Debelyanov, brought his remains in his home town. In 1934 a monument of Dimcho Debelyanov’s mother was placed near his grave in the local church yard.
