» Roman Baths - VarnaRoman Baths - Varna
In the Roman times, when Varna existed under the name of Odessos, the famous Roman baths were bult in the city. What is left of the buildings nowadays, gives specialists grounds to believe they were one of the biggest buildings in the Eastern part of the Roman Empire. The arch-like constructions are supposed to have been at least 20 m high. The building was constructed in the second half of II century on an area of around 7000 sq.m. and existed until the end of the III century. Its thick walls were built under a specific technology - on layers of stones and bricks, bound by a mixture of plaster and crumbled tiles and bricks. The walls were grouted with water resistant plaster, there were marble tiles on the floor and some of the premises were panelled in marble. Passing through the vast halls, creating a natural bareer against cold air, visitors of the baths had entered an enormous hall, called “balestra”, which occupied an area of 840 sq.m. and was a place, where the citizens of Odessos gathered to discuss different social problems. The heating system of the baths is extremely interesting even today – the baths have a double floor and special hollows, through which the warm air could reach even the top of the baths.

Pobiti Kamani Natural Monument
Located 18 km westwards from Varna, the Pobiti Kamani (the Stone Forest) is one of the most incredible natural phenomena in Bulgaria. It consists of stone columns fixed in a small desert. They have porous surface, some of them reaching 6 metres high, some up to 12 metres across at their base. Some columns resemble animals, others remind you of frozen fountains or cascades. Several rows of columns create the impression that each is made up of two cones balancing on their sharp points. The prevailing theory is that the “stone forest” near Varna was formed some 50 million years ago. The first impression is of a ruined temple but scientists have discovered that it was once a part of the sea bottom. After the receding of the water the inorganic sediments eroded, thus attaining the marvelous forms we admire today.
The Varna Dolphinarium
The Dolphinarium in the city of Varna opened doors on August 11 1984. Its construction was completed within 7 months. It is located in the northern part of the Varna Seaside Park and disposes of 1134 seats. The first dolphins arrived in the dolphinarium in August 1984. They were all of the Tursiops Truncatus type and their names were Pipi, Popi, Reyna, and Split. Later on, new dolphins were bought, and some were born in the dolphinarium. Nowadays, Pipi, Doli, Kimbo and Yoanna take part in the performances, even though Pipi is already in her 30s and appearing rarely. Yoanna, which was born in the dolphinarium, made her debut in 2001.
The dolphinarium in Varna is the only facility of its kind on the Balkan peninsula and offers its numerous guests the unique opportunity to enjoy the incredible skills of the intelligent sea mammals.
Varna Aquarium
The aquarium in Varna was built in 1912. The idea for its building was given by king Ferdinand. Its façade is extremely interesting – it combines bas-relief images of a large mussel and some of the most wide-spread animal species, inhabiting the Bulgarian Black Sea. The central hall houses a marvellous collection of freshwater and sea inhabitants, shown in their natural surroundings. In a number of the neighbouring halls, expositions presenting the flora, fauna and specific features of the Black Sea are arranged.
Devnya Springs
On the road leading from Varna to Provadia, near the Devnya river, there are about 30 springs, located relatively close to each other. These are the famous Devnya Springs – the biggest karst springs in Bulgaria. Each second, about 3200 litres of water are pouring out of the springs. The water has a constant temperature of about 17-20 degrees C, which does not freeze in the winter and is not influenced by the weather changes. The biggest and most abundant in water is the Bottomless Spring (also known as Dipsiza), and the most beautiful – the Magic Spring. There is a legend telling the Magic Spring was the favourite place for relaxation of Marciana – the sister of the Roman emperor Trayan, who conquered the Thracian village established around the springs in I century BC and called it Marcianopolis. The spring itself was also named after the emperor’s sister.
Varna - the sea capital of Bulgaria
The earliest data about Bulgaria’s sea capital – Varna, date back to 6th century BC, as the town was mentioned with its old name – Odessos (settlement situated on water). Varna is located in Northeastern Bulgaria and is the country's third biggest city. The name Odessos is not of Greek origin, which makes scientists believe that probably the settlement existed even earlier. After the Byzantine Empire conquered the Bulgarian territory, a town called Varna rose here. In 1201 Tsar Kaloyan fought back the town for Bulgaria, and Varna started its significant economic growth, favoured by the town’s geographical position. After 1878 the town developed rapidly. Today, besides important industrial, commercial and cultural centre, Varna is also one of Bulgaria’s most beautiful cities. In 1888 the construction of the city’s pride – the Sea Garden, started, and it was completed in 1912. Thousands of tourists visit Varna each year, attracted by the beaches, the Planetarium and the Dolphinarium, by the city's unique atmosphere and the night life.
Asparuhov Bridge – Varna
The Asparuhov Bridge is one of the Varna’s symbols. Its construction is related to the grown industrial importance of the Bulgarian Sea-coastal capital and the need of more convenient waterway. The old canal sea-lake could not answer the expected ship traffic and digging of new one – bigger navigation canal, was urgent. The construction of the Bridge started in the beginning of 1973. It was completed ahead of schedule and was opened on September 8, 1976. The Bridge is unique for Bulgaria and the making of its basic columns was performed in a way seldom for the entire world. The reason of the extremely unfavorable geological conditions in the most difficult part – from Varna to the central opening. The ground layer is 3-4 m of clay, underlied by 20 m of water-rich dust quicksand, under which there is a 46-m layer of slime. The layer of oligocen clay allowing the columns placing is at the depth of 70 m. The only for funding is preparing a concrete columns each reaching 53 m at depth. Under each column there are six pilot columns with diameter of 1.2 , and a height of 50 m. The length of the Bridge is 2050 m, and it’s height – 50 m. the Asparuhov Bridge is a part of the Cherno More (Black Sea) highway, and a part of the international way E-87. Besides an important transport junction, the Asparuhov Bridge is now a meeting place of the local and guest adventurers.
Today is the system administrator appreciation day. It is celebrated in the last Friday of July. The Business Industry Capital team would like to congratulate Vania and Maya – we wish you no unexpected system shut-downs, no 404 errors and less incompetent colleagues.
The Assumption of Holy Mary Cathedral
The Cathedral of Varna was built in the end of the 19th century from ashlars from the destroyed fortress walls of the city. Because the resources for the construction were not enough, the Municipality organized a lottery and thus collected about BGN 300 000. The iconostasis was made by the master Ivan Filipov of the town of Debar. Most of the icons were donated in 1901 by the Russian Tsar Nikolay II. In January 1890 the church board decided to lift the dome and to put the bells there, instead of building of a separate belfry. The construction of the today’s bell-tower finished 1941-1943. The completed temple is a cross-dome church with impressive size. In 2001 a unique outer illumination, which accented on the magnificence of the cathedral, was installed.
The Holy Mother Cathedral-Varna
The Holy Mother Cathedral is considered to be an emblem of the seaside capital of Bulgaria. It rises at the very city centre across from the theatre alley. Buses start from the square in front of it to all the vicinities and to the airport. A Revival master in the manner of Petersburg architecture built the church in 1866. Not until 1910 was it sanctified because its building and iconpainting took a lot of time. The woodcarving of the altar and the Episcopal stall are amde by masters from the Debur school, Macedonia. The central wall - paintings were completed in 1950.
The Sea Garden-Varna
The Sea Garden Park is another emblem of Varna. It dates from the end of the 19th century, being finally completed in 1908. At that time the idea to place the busts of outstanding Revival figures in some of its valleys was accepted. Nowadays there is an amphitheatre; astronomic site, the first in the country, with an observatory, planetarium and a tower; many playgrounds for children, and a small channel, where they can practice rowing, as well as a pool for water wheels and a zoo. The open-air theatre is a place, where various activities take place. These include the Varna Days of Music, the world famous International Ballet Competition and Varna Summer - a trienalle of arts. Aladzha Monastery
The Aladzha rock monastery is situated only a few kilometers south of the Riviera Holiday Club and Golden Sands sea resorts and is also a part of the Zlatni Pyasatsi natural park. The distance to Varna is 16 km.
The name of Aladzha monastery comes from the Turkish word for colourful ("aladzha") due most probably to the bright colours of its wall paintings, dating back to the early Middle Ages. The monk's cells, common rooms and sanctuaries, dug directly into the limestone rock and situated on two levels high above the ground, were connected via an external staircase. The lower floor hosted the monks' private cells, common rooms (i.e. kitchen, dining room) and a small church, while the upper level was dedicated entirely to a chapel. According to some historians, primitive monks' cells were built and inhabited already in the 4th century AC. The entire monastery is considered to date back to the 12th century AC. Unfortunately, nowadays only few of the frescoes are preserved (most of these to be found in the chapel) but the experience of visiting a monastery dug high above the ground into a steep rock is unforgettable. The monastery is declared a cultural sight and houses a small museum. Less than a kilometer away from the Aladzha Monastery, one can find a similar monastery complex, called Katakombite (The Catacombs). Katakombite has an origin and history similar to those of the Aladzha Monastery, though its remains are far less preserved.
Festival Complex-Varna
The Festival Complex is opposite the entrance of the Sea Garden Park. It is a modern building of aluminum, stone and glass. It has several stages, conference-halls, a big bazaar, and a sweet shop. Many exhibitions and festivals are held here as well as ballet and theatrical performances.
