» August 15 - Nessebar public holidayAugust 15 - Nessebar public holiday
On August 15 the town of Nessebar celebrates its public holiday. The town of Nessebar is one of the oldest towns in Europe. It is the successor of the ancient Thracian settlement called Mesambria founded in the Second century AD. Its name means town of Melsa. Since 510 AD it was turned into Greek colony town by Dorian settlers. They called it Mesambria and turned it a rival to the town of Apollo for the Black Sea trade. The city's remains, which date mostly from the Hellenistic period, include the acropolis, a temple of Apollo, an agora and a wall from the Thracian fortifications. Among other monuments, the Stara Mitropolia Basilica and the fortress date from the Middle Ages, when this was one of the most important Byzantine towns on the west coast of the Black Sea. Wooden houses built in the 19th century are typical of the Black Sea architecture of the period. <br />The old part of Nessebar is a monument of culture and is included in UNESCO’s world heritage list.

The church is rectangular with dimensions 16 m in length and 6,90 m in width. It possesses two entrances-to the South and to the West. On the eastern side there are three small richly profiled apses. All over the facade there are highly walled in arches. Above them three rows of decorative saucers and four leafed flowers. Frieze of swastikas-the solar cult symbol, made of bricks, passes above the apses on the eastern side. The richly decorated drum of the dome has eight windows in form of arches. The nartex is small and under the floor there is a medieval tomb. Only traces of the original mural paintings are saved on the inner walls.
The St. Spas Church in Nessebar
The church St. Spas was built in the 17th century. It was the only church built in Nessebar during the Ottoman slavery. According to the Ottoman rules, it is not distinguished architecturally from the other buildings in the town. It was built in 1609 from stone and mud, with wooden roof, without belfry and cupola, with small windows, and the eastern wall was half dug into the ground. St. Spas is with one hall and one apsis. The gravestone of the Roman princess Mataissa Cantacuzina Paleologina stayed many years in the apsis of the church. The walls were painted by the Nessebar icon-painters with evangelic scenes and images of saints. On the church’s walls you can see the Christ Baptism, the Christ Resurrection, the Entering of Christ in Jerusalem and many other.
