Belyova Church Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The oldest Christian monument in the region of Samokov is the Belyova Church Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is situated between the town of Samokov and the resort of Borovets. No one knows when the church was built but the woman jewelry dated to 12-13 century found here prove that the church is quite old. Furthermore, archaeologists found evidence of monks buried in the necropolis near the church from the end of 11 – early 12 century. Other findings also show that the Belyova Church existed during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. The legend tells the temple was once a small private church of the local lord of the manor Belyo, whom the church was named after. Gradually it was expanded and the old frescos were replaced by a newer coat. Local people tell that the church was dug into the ground in 15 century so that it was protected from the Turks’ ravages. In 1869 the prominent master Nikola Obrazopisov started renovating the church. He wall-painted the icon of St. Simeon of Samokov. Simeon Popovich, as the saint was born, became Metropolitan of Samokov in 1734. Highly educated, the Bulgarian bishop lead the Christian people against the Ottomans. He was captured in July 1337, tortured, and hung on August 21, 1737 is Sofia. The pasha forbade the Christians to bury him in Sofia. The relics of the Saint were found during archaeological excavations in the Belyova Church in 1995.
Sarafska House /Arie’s Home/
The Arie family is one of the most popular Jewish families in Bulgaria. Especially the family who lived in Samokov has their incredible history. They are sefardic Jews coming from Wien and they settled in Samokov in 1793. The story of Arie family is colorfully and widely connected to the life in Samokov during the 19th c. During that time the city was separated into several neighborhoods – Bulgarian, Turkish, Jewish and Gypsies’s, so it is considered that the city had a gravitation effect over settlers. The wealthy Jewish family Arie built a few houses in the city of Samokov and also the city Synagogue. The so-called Big Sarafska House that had a big hall is unfortunately not preserved. The house had a balcony with beautiful woodcarvings where the orchestra sat while some picturesque landscapes of exotic beaches with palm trees and drawings of distant cities were adorning the house walls. Out of the other four houses built by the Arie family during the 19th century’s 50s and 60s only one is still preserved and now it is called the Sarafska House. It is believed that like this one the other houses also had big yards with small waterfalls, flower-beds and glazed verandahs used also as winter-gardens. The Sarafska House is now opened to visitors as a museum. Just in front of it is the Synagogue.
Museum of History in Samokov
The Museum of History in Samokov (Western Bulgaria) is located in the real center of the town situated only 10 km away from the Borovets resort. In the beginning of the 30s of 20th century the prominent local artists Naum Hadjimladenov and Vasil Zahariev initiated the establishing of a museum collection, which should be exposed in the local community center. The realization of the idea happened in the summer of 1931, actively assisted by the another familiar artists – Hristo Yonchev – Kriskarets, and Pavel Frantsaliiski. The first curator of the museum was Naum Hadjimladenov. Vasil Zahariev was the one to develop Rules of the Museum, which were approved by the Ministry of education thus the museum collection was officially recognized. Later on Hristo Vakarelski described the exponents in an inventory book, and Slavi Genev elaborated a thematic-exposition plan. In 1957 Georgi Belstoinev completed the artistic arrangement of the museum, which is still kept in the first floor. In 1937 Hristo Yonchev – Kriskarets made a unique exhibition of the folk art in the Samokov district, which made the start of the ethnological collection. National Park Rila
Rila is the highest mountain in Bulgaria. At 2925 m, Musala Peak is the highest peak in the Balkans and all of South-Eastern Europe. The Rila area has an austere alpine beauty, with stone ridges, towering peaks, deep precipices and numerous crystal-clear lakes (more than 140) and springs. The name of the mountain is thought to originate from a Thracian word signifying "rich in water". Three of the largest Bulgarian rivers spring from the mountain - the Maritza, the Iskar, and the Mesta; some of the largest tributaries of the Struma also originate here. The river valley separates the mountain into four regions. Twelve of the eighteen highest Rila peaks above 2700 m, are situated in the Eastern region. The main Balkan water shed passes through the Middle region - between the Black Sea and Aegean basin. The most alpine part is located in the Northwestern region. The Parangalitza reserve and the group of the Seven Rila Lakes are among the most attractive natural sites.
There is an open air rink in Samokov.
The Seven Rila Lakes
The Seven Rila Lakes (Bulgarian: Седем рилски езера, Sedem rilski ezera) are a group of lakes of glacial origin (glacial lakes), situated in the northwestern Rila Mountains in Bulgaria. They are the most visited group of lakes in Bulgaria. The lakes are situated between 2,100 and 2,500 metres elevation above sea level. Each lake carries a name associated with its most characteristic feature. The highest one is called Salzata ("The Tear") due to its clear waters that allow visibility in depth. The next one in height carries the name Okoto ("The Eye") after its almost perfectly oval form.
Musala (Bulgarian: Мусала) is the highest peak in Bulgaria and the entire Balkan Peninsula, standing at 2,925 m (9,596 ft). The summit of the Rila mountain in southwestern Bulgaria, Musala is the highest peak between the Alps and the Caucasus and the highest in Eastern Europe bar the Caucasus. The easiest climb is by a straightforward footpath from the ski resort of Borovets, 10 km to the north; there is also a Gondola lift from Borovets to the Yastrebets peak at 2,369 m altitude and several mountain chalets. From Yastrebets it is a one hour hike to the Musala chalet (2,430 m), from which the ascent to the summit takes another 1,5 to 2 hours via the shelter Everest, the highest mountain hut in Bulgaria. A weather station functioned at the summit until it was devastated by a fire in 1984. The station was re-opened in 1999 as the Environmental Observatory "Musala" of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences where, in addition to climatic conditions, air pollutants and space radiation are also monitored.

Belchin - Mineral spring
The thermal waters in the Belchin have low contents of dissolved substances (about 300 mg/l), bicarbonate-sulphate-sodium composition (HCO3-SO4-Na), increased fluoride contents (about 5 mg/l) and silicon, a high pH (about 9.7), and well expressed reduction properties. The balneologic studies and assessments prove the healing and prophylactic effects of the geo-thermal waters in cases of disorders of the locomotory organs (of inflammatory, traumatic, and neurogenic nature) as well as of the female sex organs and the skin. It has been established that washing (irrigating) procedures and manipulations can have a keeling effect in cases of inflammatory deceases and processes in the throat, the cavity of the mouth, the nose, the sinuses, the ears, the rectum, and the genital organs. Drinking dosage procedures and programs are recommended in the event of deceases and discomforts of the digestive, the urino-genital, and the metabolic systems as well as for the purposes of the general purification (sanitation) of the body organism. The increased content of fluoride in the thermal waters of the Belchin may be taken into consideration in relation to the prophylactic programs against the caries of the teeth and osteoporosis. The high alkality of the water in combination with the peloid (mud therapeutic) substances provides a wide scope for balneo-cosmetics too.
